PDF to Quiz Extraction

Extract quiz questions from PDF documents including textbooks, study materials, and lecture notes.

How It Works​

  1. Open the MagicGPT Quiz Builder for Forms sidebar
  2. Expand the "📄 Generate from PDF" section
  3. Click "Choose PDF"
  4. Select a PDF file from your computer
  5. Click "Generate Quiz"
  6. Wait 30-90 seconds (depends on PDF size)
  7. Review questions added to your form

⚠️ Important: File Size Recommendation​

Use small PDF files (1-5 pages) for best results

Large PDF files (10+ pages) may:

  • Take a very long time to process
  • Time out or fail
  • Generate incomplete results
  • Use excessive API credits

Tip: Split large PDFs into smaller sections before uploading.

PDF Requirements​

✅ Text-based PDFs (most common)

  • Created from Word, Google Docs, etc.
  • Text is selectable
  • Searchable content
  • Standard fonts

⚠️ Scanned PDFs (limited support)

  • Must have OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
  • Text should be selectable
  • Quality depends on scan quality

❌ Image-only PDFs (not recommended)

  • Scans without OCR
  • Non-selectable text
  • Will not work well

Preparing PDFs​

Extracting Specific Sections​

Instead of uploading entire textbook:

Using Preview (Mac):

  1. Open PDF in Preview
  2. Select pages you want (e.g., end-of-chapter questions)
  3. File → Export as PDF → Save Selection
  4. Upload smaller PDF

Using Adobe Acrobat:

  1. Open PDF
  2. Tools → Organize Pages
  3. Select pages to extract
  4. Extract → Export as new PDF
  5. Upload extracted section

Using Online Tools:

  • ILovePDF.com
  • Extract specific page ranges

Optimizing PDFs​

Before uploading:

  1. Remove unnecessary pages

    • Table of contents
    • Index pages
    • Blank pages
    • Irrelevant sections

  2. Keep it focused

    • Only include question pages
    • Remove long explanatory text
    • Focus on 1-5 pages max

  3. Check text selectability

    • Open PDF
    • Try to highlight/select text
    • If you can't select text, it may not work

Page Limits​

Recommended: 1-5 pages Maximum: 10 pages (may be slow) Not recommended: 10+ pages

Quality Over Quantity​

Better to:

  • Process smaller PDFs multiple times
  • Extract 5-10 good questions per PDF
  • Have faster, more reliable results

Than to:

  • Upload massive PDFs
  • Wait very long times
  • Risk timeouts or errors

Troubleshooting​

Processing Takes Too Long​

Cause: PDF too large

Solutions:

  • Extract fewer pages (1-3 pages ideal)
  • Split into multiple smaller PDFs
  • Remove unnecessary content
  • Try again with smaller file

Can't Extract Text​

Cause: Image-only PDF or locked PDF

Solutions:

  • Check if text is selectable
  • If scanned document, ensure it has OCR
  • Try converting to text-based PDF
  • Use image-to-quiz feature instead

Generated Questions Incomplete​

Cause: PDF too complex or large

Solutions:

  • Reduce page count
  • Simplify content (remove images/diagrams if possible)
  • Extract clearer question sections
  • Try one page at a time

Incorrect Questions Generated​

Cause: PDF formatting or content type

Solutions:

  • Ensure questions clearly formatted
